John Pedrick ’67

In 2016, John Pedrick, ’67, was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canine Assistants, a nonprofit organization that has provided service dogs to people with disabilities since 1991. Located on a farm in Alpharetta, GA, the organization breeds, raises and trains primarily Golden Retrievers, Golden-Labrador mixes and “Golden Doodles,” with a staff of 25 and 300 volunteers. Dogs perform tasks to assist persons with physical disabilities. Dogs are also trained to assist persons with seizure disorders and diabetes. Still other dogs work as therapy dogs in hospital and school settings. It takes approximately 18 months to train a service dog at a cost of $31,000 per dog. From the beginning, the organization’s philosophy has been to provide service dogs free of charge to recipients who come from all over the country. The organization is supported by donations from corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Milk Bone, and individual donors.(last updated: August 2018)

James (Jim, aka Big Dog) Joseph Loughman, Jr

After UVA went in the Navy for 2 years active & 4 years reserve where my boss was fellow UVA Theta Chi Paul Medford (1968 “Captain Paul- Captain of the Road Trip Team”). He was a great boss. We were stationed at Andrews AFB at the Naval Air Facility. Best Theta Chi memory: We were IM Softball Champs 1968. I was catcher.
Before the Navy I worked for a year for Market Facts, Inc, the market research company founded by Wm F O’Dell, UVA Marketing Professor.
Then went to U of Chicago for an MBA in Marketing (1974). Chicago, by the way, is phenomenal, if you are single, which I was.
After that I sold business telephone systems for all the major companies, eg, AT&T, PacBell, MCI, Nortel, etc. for 25 years. Post retirement I drove a Limo for 9 years. Drove Heather Locklear, James Caan, Walter Cronkike, et al.
Still married to my beautiful bride Jan of 41 years & living in Beaumont, CA, 30 miles west of Palm Springs. Moved to So. California in 1977 but still miss Virginia & Chicago. The best thing about Calif is the non denominational Christian Churches. Have been “Born Again” since 1980 & it is great. Strongly recommend it.
