This post is from CDAA president Matt Cameron:
First and foremost, I hope this note finds all of you safe and healthy. These are challenging times, and my thoughts go out to everyone in the Cavalier Daily family affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
I also wanted to share some positive news about the great work that the student staff at The Cavalier Daily is continuing to produce amid the current situation. After being told to evacuate from Grounds last week, the CD staff has successfully pivoted to a distributed and digital model for covering the impacts that COVID-19 is having within the University community.
In fact, just last week they managed to publish a special print and digital edition that includes excellent coverage of topics ranging from:
- The financial and technological difficulties that some students are facing as UVA transitions to an online learning model
- The financial implications of canceling March Madness
- A personal essay from one student who was studying abroad in Italy at the onset of their outbreak
There is much more great content available on the CD website, including a letter from Editor-in-Chief Nik Popli detailing the CD’s coverage plans. I encourage everyone to read it. The CD’s outstanding work was also recognized in The Washington Post, which published this article about how student journalists are responding to the crisis.
The CD has continued to fulfill its mission despite financial uncertainty, caused by a sudden loss of advertising revenue. The CD Board is helping the student leadership manage this situation, and the CDAA stands ready to support as needed. Those of you who are able to help can donate to the CD here. And if you haven’t already, please subscribe to the CD’s e-newsletter and follow their Facebook page to stay on top of their ongoing coverage.
Please join me in thanking the entire CD staff for their coverage of this defining moment in the history of our University, country, and world.
Stay safe, healthy, and informed – my best to you all.
Matt
