Dear Cavalier Daily alumni and friends,
My name is Alexis Gravely, and I’m writing to introduce myself as the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association’s new president. I was elected during our board meeting last month, and I’m thrilled to be stepping into this role for the CDAA after joining the Board last year. I’m guided by a desire to give back to an organization that has given me so much, which will shape my priorities as president.
I want to extend my gratitude on behalf of the CDAA to Matthew Cameron, who has just completed a distinguished term as the CDAA president. Matt has done incredible work for the students and alumni involved with The Cavalier Daily, including forming the CD’s Board of Directors and beginning the process to launch our new endowment fund to support the paper’s long-term goals and overall stability for the future. Thank you, Matt, for all you’ve accomplished.
A little about myself: I graduated from UVA in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Media Studies and a master’s degree in Elementary Education. I joined the CD during my first semester on Grounds and served as senior associate news editor, assistant managing editor, and public editor, earning a Virginia Press Association award for my part of our coverage of the 2017 Charlottesville white supremacist rallies. I currently live and work in Washington, D.C. as a reporter, covering Congress, the White House, and the Department of Education for Inside Higher Ed.
As president, I plan to continue much of the CDAA’s important work while also pursuing some new initiatives. A few of my goals include the following:
• Finding new opportunities for student journalists and staffers to learn from and interact with our experienced, accomplished alums
• Working with the paper’s editors to distribute our scholarship funds, with a focus on needs-based scholarships aimed at improving staff diversity
• Building alumni engagement, especially for our young alums
• Continuing our efforts to financially support and sustain the CD, including by getting our endowment fund ready for distribution
Of course, none of this can be accomplished without your support, whether that’s by giving your time or by making donations. Thank you for your continued commitment to this organization. I look forward to getting to know many of our alums and am excited for the futures of both the CD and the CDAA! If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at the contact information listed below.
Sincerely,
Alexis Gravely
