Dear Cavalier Daily alumni and readers,
For 135 years, The Cavalier Daily has been performing an essential public service for the University, Charlottesville, and greater Virginia communities. Just this year, the paper of record for the area:
- Led local and national media outlets in reporting on the removal and detainment of pro-Palestinian protesters camped on Grounds (“Police forcefully clear encampment near University Chapel, detain protesters” – 5/5/2024)
- Broke the story of medical school faculty alleging “egregious acts” and a culture of fear fostered by leadership (“UVA Health faculty demand removal of health system CEO, School of Medicine dean” – 9/5/2024)
- Was cited in The New York Times for first reporting on the suspension of the University Guide Service by UVA administration (“Office of Admissions interns replaced the Guide Service – are their tours any different?” – 9/8/2024)
But, as with any newspaper, finances are an ongoing challenge. The cost of publishing the paper and paying rent to the University for office space (to maintain The Cavalier Daily’s independence) keep increasing, and advertising revenues are declining.
For this dogged and informative journalism to continue for another 135 years, we need your help.
The Cavalier Daily Endowment is a special tool that allows the talented Cavalier Daily journalists to focus on their journalism. However, in order to tap into it, we need to raise $100,000 in cash. We’re only a third of the way to reaching our goal — with $63,000 more to go.
Anything you can give would help to ensure the sustainability of the Cavalier Daily’s operations for years to come.
Visit the Cavalier Daily Alumni Association website to donate to The Cavalier Daily Endowment Fund (FCDA 108). If you have any questions, please reach out to CDAA Vice President of Fundraising Ben Tobin (Col ’19), benjaminjtobin@gmail.com or CDAA President Alexis Gravely (Col ’19), alexisgravely15@gmail.com.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this note and for your commitment to a free and fair press at the University of Virginia. Have a happy holiday season!
Warm regards,
Ben Tobin (Col ’19) Alexis Gravely (Col ’19, Educ ’19)
