Our new brothers
This year’s pledge class included 21 new members. Out of the 21 new members, there are two third years and one second year. One of the third years, Julian Cummings, has been a midfielder on UVa’s varsity soccer team for all three of his years at UVA. Additionally, Michael Mensah, a first year, joined UVa’s varsity track and field team. There are also seven club sport athletes in the pledge class: Ian Roberts (soccer), Nick Bierman (lacrosse), Alex Lee (baseball), Steve Marinaro, Timi Ayoh, and Andrew Braun (rugby), and Jacob Kuchta (golf). The 2017 pledge class includes two legacies, Jake Walsh (brother of Sam Walsh who graduated in 2015), and Dan Ungerleider (brother of Steve Ungerleider who also graduated in 2015). This pledge class contains six members who are majoring in systems engineering and eight who are on the pre-commerce track. All of these pre-commerce students participated in a finance club, The Analyst Jumpstart, that was led by Van Spina who was aided by Andrew McGee, a member of the 2016 pledge class. This club included weekly lectures led by Van and homework assignments that covered various finance related topics and concluded with a stock pitch. This program is the first initiative in creating a formalized career and academic mentorship program within the chapter. The 2017 pledge class is a very bright and responsible group of young men who all place great focus in their studies.
