Pete Cone Memorial Scholarship
Please join us on March 1, 2022 in Charlottesville, VA at 12:30 pm as we honor Lieutenant Burtis Parsons “Pete” Cone, and alumnus of The University of Virginia. Light refreshments will be provided for guests. The reception will take place in Alumni Hall’s Manning Pavilion.
Prior to serving in the Coast Guard, Lieutenant Cone graduated from St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, VA.
Pete attended The University of Virginia for the 1938 and 1939 academic years before leaving for the workforce. Pete was employed by American Suppliers Incorporated.
During World War II, Lieutenant Cone served on the USS Leopold DE-319. This ship was later torpedoed by a German Submarine 650 miles west of Scotland where 171 of the 199 men on board, including Lieutenant Cone, were killed. In addition to his service, Lieutenant Cone was awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal Ribbon. A plaque honoring Pete and other Virginia alumni who lost their lives during WWII can be found on Grounds.
