2022 Pete Cone Memorial Scholarship Application

The applicant must:
1. Be a member of The Raven Society
2. Contribute meaningfully to the Society
3. Have financial need
4. Be a undergraduate or graduate student at UVA

The applicant will be selected by The Raven Council and the $2,000 scholarship will be applied to the fall 2022 semester. Recipients must be a current student at the the time the scholarship is awarded. Applications will be open in Spring 2022 for a 6-week period prior to review. Please fill out the following application by 11:59pm on February 6, 2022 to be considered for this year's scholarship.

Lieutenant Pete Cone attended The University of Virginia for the 1938 and 1939 academic years before leaving for the workforce. Lieutenant Cone was employed by American Suppliers Incorporated.

During World War II, Lieutenant Cone served on the USS Leopold DE-319. This ship was later torpedoed by a German Submarine 650 miles west of Scotland where 171 of the 199 men on board, including Lieutenant Cone, were killed. In addition to his service, Lieutenant Cone was awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal Ribbon. A plaque honoring Pete Cone and other University of Virginia alumni who lost their lives during WWII can be found on Grounds.

The Pete Cone Memorial Scholarship was established in 2021 by Pete Cone’s nephew, and Raven Society member, Berkley Cone ’72, and the surviving members of the Pete Cone family.
