A Message from Commander Shin

Coming into this role, I was deeply inspired by our past Commanders, Jack Billies (’21) and Will Keen (’20). Jack led our chapter to our first Rock Chapter Award, a testament to the strides we’ve made in enhancing our operations and brotherhood. Both Jack and Will were strong, passionate leaders, and as I assumed this position, I aimed to continue their legacy while also crafting my own. It is an honor to lead such a committed and supportive group of brothers, backed by an executive team that is equally passionate about engaging our membership and hosting memorable events.

A primary goal during my tenure as Commander has been to bolster our alumni involvement. Inspired by the impactful alumni foundations I observed at other Sigma Nu chapters during the Grand Chapter in 2023, I recognized the significant benefits of alumni engagement in chapter operations and leadership roles. We’ve been hard at work enhancing this area, planning a major annual alumni event this fall that will include a brotherhood dinner with awards and a Hall of Fame induction. Additionally, in collaboration with Terry Birkel and James Bogart, we are revitalizing our Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) to boost our operational efficiency and enhance alumni influence in chapter affairs.

Furthermore, I am dedicated to ensuring that Sigma Nu makes a meaningful impact at UVA and in the surrounding Charlottesville community. This spring, our chapter successfully raised funds for the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA) in Charlottesville, Service for Sight, and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. We are also looking to expand our partnerships with non-Greek life organizations at UVA and local charities.

Quentin Shin Headshot

Two years ago, the idea of joining a fraternity seemed uncertain to me. Now, as Commander, I am profoundly aware of the impact Sigma Nu has had on me. This role has been transformative, filled with leadership opportunities and personal growth. I am enthusiastic about fostering similar experiences for our brothers. Balancing this role with my academic and extracurricular commitments has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I am grateful for the support of our brotherhood at the Beta Chapter, and as we move forward, I am committed to concluding my term in a manner that will make our fraternity proud.

Sincerely,
Quentin Shin, Commander
