A new book, The Road Back, a Journey of Grace and Grit, was recently released on Amazon.com. It’s written by Michael Vitez, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, and chronicles a devastating injury suffered by our son, Matt, while biking on the Blue Ridge Parkway when he was a third-year student at UVA. Matt survived a head-on crash with an automobile. Miraculously, he was discharged from the UVA medical center 25 days later, and was back in school by the beginning of the second semester. Five months after the accident, Matt competed in the Charlottesville half-marathon, setting a personal best of 1 hour, 27 minutes. And by that summer, he was competing again in triathlons. Matt graduated on time in May 2010, began medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in August 2010, and competed in the Cozumel Ironman in November 2010. He is now completing his second year of medical school at Penn Medicine. There are many lesso ns in our son’s story, but above all there is a message of hope and inspiration, and the importance of believing in oneself and never giving up, never giving in. Again, the book is entitled The Road Back, a Journey of Grace and Grit. You’ll find that Matt’s story prominently features UVA and in particular the UVA hospital and all the incredible doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who helped him survive and recover.

In my 20th year as the director of the city history museum in Alexandria, VA . . . almost 30 with city government, altogether. My son Andrew is starting his 3rd year at UVa, and playing football (photo from Meet the Team Day 8/16/15), while his sister is a junior in high school and hopes to end up in C’ville as well. All the best to Beta Pi and the active brothers.
