Run For Yeards 2014

Carolyn Schaefer, ‘15

On Saturday, March 29th, 2014, Kappa Alpha Theta hosted the third annual “Run for Yeards” 5k honoring Yeardley Reynolds Love. It was held at Nameless Field and over 300 people registered. In total, we raised $11,908. Of this, $4,150 will be donated to the One Love Foundation, $3,258 to CASA, $3,000 to the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, and $1,500 to the Yeardley Reynolds Love Endowment Fund. The event was a huge success despite the untimely weather; we were able to double our numbers from last year. Due to the rain, the reception following the race was moved to the Theta house where guests enjoyed music, catering from Slice and Take it Away, and a speech about bystander intervention, given by Mark DeNoble. Mark is a grant recipient of the Yeardley Love Endowment Fund and is well known for his efforts to help raise awareness of sexual violence and bystander intervention. We were very fortunate to have him come talk to us along with members of the UVa organization, OneLess. By having these people attend the reception and speak openly about ways in which we can prevent sexual misconduct, we were able to return to the core meaning behind the philanthropy. Run for Yeards was held not only to honor Yeardley’s memory, but also to help speak up against relationship violence.

Second years await the start of the third annual Run For Yeards 5k Race.
