Information Sessions and Tryouts

A 2nd ON-GROUNDS INFORMATION SESSION HAS JUST BEEN ADDED. COME TONIGHT AT 7PM TO GILMER 190. IT’LL LAST ABOUT A HALF HOUR. SEE YOU THERE!

UVa Students,

If you’re a first- or second-year student, a good athlete, and are not already playing a varsity sport, consider trying out for the men’s rowing team. If you’re a small man or woman (i.e., approximately 120 pounds or less), consider trying out for the team as a coxswain.

Virginia Rowing is one of the finest rowing programs in the United States. We compete all over the United States, as well as internationally. This is, without question, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

TRYOUTS

Tryouts will take place at Slaughter Recreation Center, Wednesday, September 4 through Friday, September 6.

3:00, 4:00, 5:00, & 6:00PM time slots are available each day. Come to any one session (or more) on each day. If your class schedule will not allow you to attend a tryout on one of those days, DO NOT WORRY, just come to as many sessions as you can attend.

HOW WILL TRYOUTS WORK?

Everyone will be taught how to row the indoor rowing ergometer. Lots of instruction and feedback from the coaches and varsity rowers. Each day, everyone will pull short erg tests. The final erg test will determine who’ll ultimately make the novice rowing team.

If you’ve never rowed before, DO NOT WORRY. Each year about half of the athletes who make the team did not row in high school. Raw athleticism and ability is what matters most.

Here is a PDF of basic rowing-ergometer technique.

Take a risk; come try out. Good luck, everyone!

Do not hesitate to e-mail the novice coach, Erich Shuler, at eshuler@embarqmail.com, with any questions.

Complete the short form below to download the team’s recruiting brochure, which answers most of the questions that students have about the sport, about tryouts, etc.
