Friends of Virginia Squash

Friends of Virginia Squash (FoVS) is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. As summarized in the organization’s bylaws, the fundamental mission of the FoVS is “to promote and provide support to the men’s and women’s squash teams at the University of Virginia.” The organization was formed on December 12, 2011 and the board was formed on June 15, 2012.

The Quantitative Foundation, a Charlottesville-based philanthropic organization, furnished the initial grant to establish the Friends of Virginia Squash and the foundation continues to provide funding for the vast majority of the teams’ annual operational budget, including the coaches’ salaries. Quantitative Foundation also provided the financial gift to UVa for the construction of McArthur Squash Center, which opened on April 21, 2013.

FoVS holds a contract with the UVa Fund and the UVa Alumni Association to operate as an “Alumni Interest Group” within the University. This means that all FoVS funds are managed exclusively by the UVa Fund, an organization whose mission is “to provide financial management options to help [Alumni Interest Groups] enrich the University of Virginia community.” As part of the contract, FoVS also receives assistance with key administrative duties, including website management and marketing and communications.

The board currently consists of 12 members representing the various groups associated with the FoVS mission. The alumni members are Sandy Worthington (‘78), Christine Montgomery (‘08), and Jonathan Rheuban (‘09). Representing the UVa faculty on the board is Ted White, David Mary and Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law. Virginia Squash Teams Head Coach, Mark Allen, along with men’s team co-captain Matt Brown and women’s team captain Celia Dyer, represent the team. Ed Bralower represents team parents. The board also includes the Director of the UVA Fund, Jennifer Bonenfant; the Executive Director of Quantitative Foundation, Will Foshay; a Project Manager at Quantitative Foundation, Francis Johnson; and Jaffray Woodriff, the Trustee of Quantitative Foundation and FoVS.

The positions of the Board of FoVS are as follows:

President & Treasurer: Francis Johnson

FoVS is funded exclusively through donations from individuals and institutions who want to see the sport and the program flourish. If you would like to become a Friend of Virginia Squash, please click here to support the teams.
