After a distinguished radio career, Dick Bartley (’73) has decided to “hang up his headphones” and retire from a 50+ year radio adventure. Dick was a key member of WUVA (640 AM) Student Radio from 1969 to 1973.

Dick Bartley and Paul McCartneyHe was the longtime nationally-syndicated radio host of such shows as Rock & Roll’s Greatest Hits, Solid Gold Saturday Night, American Gold, The Classic Countdown, Solid Gold Scrapbook, and Dick Bartley’s Classic Hits. Bartley was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2000.

Dick was a dynamic announcer and leader with WUVA during his student years. Following graduation, he worked in the Charlottesville radio market (WCHV, WELK) before moving to WBBM-FM in Chicago in 1975.

In 1982, Dick’s highly-rated Chicago show, Saturday Night Oldies went into national syndication via the RKO Radio Network. Under its new name, Solid Gold Saturday Night became the first nationwide, live, call-in request oldies show.

Bartley later hosted and produced programs for Westwood One, the ABC Radio Network and the United Stations Radio Network until retiring on January 2, 2022. All of Dick’s programs showcased the classic rock, pop & soul hits of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s.

Dick Bartley’s radio career is legendary in the history of WUVA, Inc. – he has participated in many WUVA anniversary celebrations and has helped train student announcers.
