Mike Moose ’71, Chairman and Treasurer

Mike Moose grew up in Washington, D.C. and Silver Spring, Maryland. He attended St. John’s Military School in Washington, D.C. before attending the University of Virginia, where he graduated in 1971 with a B.S. in Commerce with Distinction. Through his enrollment in Army ROTC, he attended U.Va. with a four year scholarship, and was a distinguished military graduate. He later attended Campbell University, where he earned his M.B.A. with Honors in 1984, as well as the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He had a long military career, serving active duty from 1971-1976 with the 82nd Airborne Division in Okinawa and at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as well as serving army reserve duty from 1976-1999 with various command, staff, and airborne officer assignments in the Carolinas. He was mobilized as an assistant public affairs and media relations officer in Operation Desert Storm from 1990-1991 with the 18th Airborne Corps in Saudi Arabia, and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1999. He was recalled to duty from USAR retirement from 2008-2010 to serve as National Media Spokesman, Public Affairs Officer and Communications Strategist for HQ, Department of the Army in the Pentagon. It was here that he achieved the rank of Army Personnel, G-1, before he retired in 2010. His civilian experience includes work with Management Recruiters, Inc., WFNC-AM & WGSM-FM, and Radio Shack. While at the University of Virginia, he was involved with WUVA radio, Army ROTC, the Jefferson Sabres Society, the U.Va. Rifle Team, the Army ROTC Rifle Team, the Raven Society, and Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity. He has served as an incredibly active alumnus, involved in the 1971 Reunion Committee, the Washington D.C. Alumni Club, the Army ROTC alumni club, the WUVA Media Anniversary Committee, and through his leadership of the WUVA Media Alumni Interest Group. He now resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he is married with two grown children.

Alan Kurland ’58, Vice Chair and Secretary

Alan Kurland attended UVA from 1956-1958, in which time he was on air at WUVA. He also held a brief on air job at WTOP in Washington, D.C. in 1958. After serving reserve duty in the United States Coast Guard in 1959, he graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1963 as a lieutenant with a degree in Marine Sciences. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard active reserves from 1963-1971. His civilian career experiences included a footwear buyer with National Bellas Hess from 1963-1965, sales manager at David Shoe Company from 1965-1968, footwear designer at Jade Footwear from 1968-1971, vice president at Morse Shoe Company from 1971-1974, president of Kurland Enterprises from 1974-1989, executive vice president of DGL Enterprises from 1990-1992, vice president of Tri Union USA from 1992-1995, and manager at Johnston & Murphy from 1996-2008. He is now retired and assisting students at WUVA Media, as well as serving on the Committee for New Media Citizenship in Charlottesville.

Bob O’Brien ’71, Membership Chair

Bob O’ Brien grew up mostly in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Before attending the University of Virginia, he graduated from the American School in London in 1967. While at U.Va., he began his collegiate curriculum in the Engineering School, where he studied for two and a half years before transferring to the College of Arts & Sciences, where he graduated with a B.A. in Economics in 1971. He worked as a newsman and disc jockey at WUVA from 1967-1970, and he worked part-time as a news reporter at WCHV-AM from 1970-1971. His professional experiences include finance and marketing work at Mellon Bank, Chrysler Corporation, General Motors, Gulf+Western Manufacturing, Nissan Motor Corporation USA, Denso Products and Services Americas, Inc., and the Jim Russell International Racing Drivers School in Canada. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the California Society of CPAs (CalCPA), the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Society of Automotive Analysts. He has lived in Huntington Beach, California since 1991.
