Dear Cavalier Daily Alumni and Friends:
My name is Nathan Onibudo. I’m a third-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences double majoring in Philosophy and Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law. I am so honored and excited to be serving as the 135th editor-in-chief of The Cavalier Daily.
I began my time on the paper as an opinion columnist who wrote about student self-governance and University administration — a fancy way of saying that I wrote a lot about the need for a multi-sanction Honor system.
After a year as an opinion columnist, I was elected as the CD’s executive editor for the paper’s 134th term. During my first two years on staff, I developed a deep appreciation for the paper’s position as both a watchdog in our community and a catalyst for lasting change.
It was this appreciation that inspired me to run in December to become The Cavalier Daily’s editor-in-chief. During the election, and throughout my first months on the job, I’ve talked a lot about investing in the students that invest in The Cavalier Daily. This is the ethos that frames the work I hope to accomplish during my term.
More specifically, I hope to provide the newspaper’s Junior Board with concrete training opportunities, led by industry experts, so that they can fulfill their job responsibilities with competence and confidence. I hope to enhance the newspaper’s digital presence, to amplify the work of our journalists and increase the impact The Cavalier Daily has within the University community. And I hope to finish creating a structure for paying staffers within our organization.
Whether it’s growing threats to academic freedom across the nation, or increased administrative turnover prompting dangerous encroachments on student self-governance right here on Grounds, I believe the work we are doing at The Cavalier Daily is as important now as it has ever been. It’s truly a privilege to better the University community by working for The Cavalier Daily, and the incredibly talented individuals that comprise the current CD staff make working in my position an absolute pleasure.
I hope to give back to this newspaper that has already given so much to me, and I look forward to partnering with the alumni association during the next year to ensure our treasured organization is the best that it can be.
