Parents, Friends, and Alumni,
My name is Ben Kobrin and I am the Undergraduate President of St. Elmo Hall. I have met many of you and even enjoyed watching the Hoos beat FSU with some of you at our Dads’ Weekend Event. On that note, we are still planning on having a Moms’ Weekend next semester.
I am reaching out to draw attention to an important cause, Men’s Health Awareness. When talking about men’s health, we focus on three areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide awareness. Although these topics often go unnoticed, the numbers are staggering. Men die on average six years earlier than women. Prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50 years. Worldwide, one man dies by suicide every minute. Moreover, men account for 75% of all suicides.
As a fraternity, we have an obligation to create awareness around this issue and help find ways to address it. That is why this year we are raising money for the Movember Foundation. The Movember Foundation uses the month of November to target men’s health issues. The organization brings together experts in all fields of men’s health to create novel solutions. Our goal this year is to raise $2,000 for the Movember Foundation. In addition to our own fundraising efforts, we will be partnering with other fraternities around Grounds to raise money and draw awareness to men’s health.
Ultimately, the current issues in men’s health have reached crisis levels. Too often men avoid seeking help due to incorrect stereotypes of strength and masculinity. By donating to this cause, we can help end this stigma. The link attached will lead you to our website through which donations can be made. Thank you for your time and Go Hoos.
