A memorial service celebrating the life of Harry Marshall, UVA ’61, will be held at St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C. at 11:00 am on Friday, September 17. A reception will immediately follow at the Chevy Chase Club. For almost 30 years Harry steadfastly led the Virginia Beta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta, and then Phi Society, at the University of Virginia – with compassion, humor and grace. He passed away on June 22 at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland with his wife, Claire, and family at his side.
The Board of Trustees of Virginia Beta are strongly encouraging all Phi Delta Theta and Phi Society alumni to attend the memorial service and reception in honor and tribute to Harry, who gave so much of his life to promoting the ideals and manners of a true gentleman at his favorite University. Harry committed endless hours to the University of Virginia and to the Phi Society and Phi Delta Theta organizations in Charlottesville. Known for his steadfast loyalty and gentlemanly manner, he was beloved and respected by all – both students and University administrators alike.
Harry’s family has requested an approximate number of Phi alumni and guests that will attend the service and/or reception in person. Although all are welcome to attend without responding in advance, we ask that, if possible, you respond using the following form by Tuesday evening. Please let us know if you will be attending.

Directions to the Service and Reception:
St. John’s church is located at 1525 H Street NW on Lafayette Square, directly across from the White House. The Chevy Chase Club is located at 6100 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, Maryland, which is about a 20 minute drive from the church.

For those who are driving, parking near the church may be limited (although there are parking garages nearby), so extra time should be allowed (or Uber/Lyft/Taxi). Valet parking will be available at the Chevy Chase Club (main entrance circular drive). Weather permitting, the reception will be located on the lawn behind the main clubhouse building (no masking required outdoors). Masks will be required inside at St. John’s (although every other pew will be blocked off) and also for those needing to go inside at the Chevy Chase clubhouse.
