Greetings, SAM alumni!
We had a lot of fun at the 2024 SAM Alumni Weekend. If you were not able to attend, we hope to see you at the 2025 event – if not sooner!
The weekend started with a Friday morning golf outing at Boar’s Head Resort’s Birdwood Golf Course. This was attended by Bob and Karen Harriman (Engr ’77; Nursing ’77), Skip Fitz (Engr ’77), Howard Kerbel (Com ’82), Paul Bernardo (Col ’77), and Charlie White (Darden ’86).
In the afternoon, there was a Beta Psi Housing Corporation meeting at the house run by current BPHC President, Dan Lyons (Engr ’85). Afterwards, there was a career advice exchange between alumni and current brothers.
In the evening, the inaugural event of the Beta Psi Alumni Association was held at the Tavern and Grocery Restaurant. This event was well attended, and a good time was had by all.
Saturday morning began with many alumni attending a More Than the Score lecture at Alumni Hall where a UVA professor Mike Lenox discussed the concept of market disruption and the electric car market.
In the afternoon, there were two activities to choose from: The UVA football game against Boston College and a winery outing at the Hazy Mountain Vineyards and Brewery. The Cavaliers staged an exciting comeback victory with a final score of 24-14.
Saturday night, there was the annual Blue White Basketball game where several groups were able to preview the upcoming UVA men’s basketball season. They saw a lot of talent and hopefully, the beginning of another run at a National Championship.
Most people stayed at the Hampton Inn at its location near the corner and the number of alumni staying there made it a great meeting place and launching pad for activities.
Overall, it was a great weekend! Thanks to Gus Callaway (Com ’80), Howard Siegel (Com ’70), Chuck Shorley (Col ’75), Ron Wiley (Col ’80), and many others for their help in organizing this weekend.
We are already making plans for 2025 with the hope of choosing a weekend that does not conflict with the Jewish Holidays or overlap with UVA’s Homecomings. It looks like the best two potential weekends will be October 18 or 25. We have reached out to several hotels to try to compare rates and amenities. While everyone seems to like the location of the Hampton Inn, we want to see what else is available. We have reached out to the Graduate, the Draftsman, the Marriott, and the Hampton Inn to try to get the best rate for our alumni.
Regarding the Beta Psi Alumni Association, we are planning for more events throughout the year at different locations throughout the country. We currently have 52 members and if you are interested in joining and getting this wonderful pin, please contact Howard Siegel (Com ’70) at hsiegel1948@me.com.
One final note, UVA is currently running a “Hoos Got Sole?” sock campaign. If you donate $25 or more, you can get a University designed ankle or crew sock and the excess (over $15) is tax deductible.
Alumni can contribute money to any UVA academic department and/or social/fraternal organization accredited by the University. Please consider donating to the Beta Psi Alumni Association (BPAA) along with other Academic departments and/or social organizations. One can type “Beta Psi Alumni Association” in the selection block and BPAA will show up. This campaign ends on November 17, 2024, at midnight.
