Mark Your Calendars: 2025 SAM Fall Alumni Weekend

Greetings Beta Psi Alumni,

Considering hotel availability and religious holidays, we will be hosting our annual SAM Fall Alumni Weekend October 16-19, 2025. It was later announced that this would also be Homecomings Weekend.

As we said in the last blast email in December 2024, we took the feedback about the hotel into account and were able to secure a group reservation at The Draftsman hotel. The reservation is for 10 rooms Thursday night (October 16) at $224/night plus 25 more rooms (35 total) for Friday and Saturday (October 17-18) at the rate of $364/night. Please note: This block is available now through September 1, 2025. Cancellations after September 1 can be made 48 hours prior to your check-in date without any penalty.

In addition, we have the exclusive use of their Founder’s Lounge on the second floor for three days and a discounted valet parking at $15/night. We encourage you to take advantage of this group rate now as rooms are “first come, first available”.

Please note the following from the Draftsman about what the online booking rate will show for those planning to stay on Thursday, October 16:

We look forward to seeing you next October. Please note that Marriott does not allow us to create room blocks with two separate rates. With that being said, for those choosing to stay on Thursday the rate will be $224 but will be booked at the weekend rate of $364. This will be modified before arrival. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Draftsmansales@Marriott.com.

Planned Events

Friday, October 17

  • Annual Golf Outing, Golf Course TBD
    • We had six alumni and spouses last year and are looking for more people to join us.
  • Welcome Back Alumni Gathering, Founder’s Lounge, Draftsman Hotel
    • We will have a cash bar set up by the hotel. We can bring sodas and snacks and food from outside the hotel into the Draftsman but not alcoholic beverages because of their ABC license. We’ll have to determine how to charge for hors d’oeuvres for the event because the tax exempt status of the BPAA prevents us from paying for food and drinks out of the fund. This year we’ll probably charge between $15 and $25 per person. The higher amounts will be for those alumni (and their guests) that that are not a member of the Beta Psi Alumni Club. Spouses of BPAA members will be charged the discounted member rate.

Saturday, October 18

  • Lifetime Learning’s More Than the Score, Location TBD
  • UVA vs. Washington State Football Game, Scott Stadium
    • A link to purchase football tickets to the Washington State game at a discounted group rate will be available sometime in the summer. Game time should be announced in late August or early September.
  • SAM Winery Visit, Location TBD
    • Last year’s was very successful with about 20 Alumni and spouses attending.

Sunday, October 19

  • UVA Athletic Events, Various Locations
    • Like last year, we expect the University to have several other athletic events sponsored by the athletic department around the Grounds throughout the Homecomings Weekend.

We are still working out the details on an event at Glen Burnie, the home of Randy and Shauna Shapiro during the weekend. It will be open to all Beta Psi Alumni.

Beta Psi Alumni Association

A few notes about the finances of the Beta Psi Alumni Club:

Currently, we have 54 members: 24 six-year members; 23 one-year members; 2 Life members and 5 two-to-twelve year members. One year members should renew their membership by July 1, 2025, the start of the fiscal year of the BPAA.

As of May 1, 2025, we have collected a little over $12,500 over the past year net of expenses. These funds are fully invested with the UVA Alumni Association in their Short Term group portfolio.

As promised, we will use this money as a “safety net “ in case of any financial emergencies/liabilities. We’ll also support the operations of the Club in keeping with its tax exempt status. Over the past year we have had expenses of $719.52. These were to pay for a room rental for last year’s reception, the BPAA stand up banners, as well as shipping and handling for mailing out the BPAA club pins. The costs of the club pins were donated by a charter member as was some of the food costs over and above the money generated by last year’s small entrance fees to members and nonmembers.

If you have any questions about this Fall Weekend or other future events that may be sponsored by the BPAA, please contact Howard Siegel (Com ’70) or Gus Callaway (Com ’80).

And finally, we are looking for alumni in various parts of the country that are interested in organizing a regional social event in their locale. Please contact Howard Siegel if you would like to help us bring the spirit of Beta Psi Brotherhood to your area sometime during the year. The fall weekends in Charlottesville have been a resounding success, and we’d like to recreate some of it locally.

Fast and Firm
