Beta Psi Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu Celebrates 50 Years at Virginia

On the weekend of October 19-21, 2018 the Beta Psi chapter at the University of Virginia celebrated its 50th Anniversary in Charlottesville. We had a packed weekend as 109 alumni, their guests, and the current brothers participated in several events on the Grounds and around town.
The fun began with a Friday reception and dinner at the iconic Colonnade Club, the first University building on The Lawn designed by Thomas Jefferson, the founder of The University. Our own alumni musicians Andy Rutherford and Norman Kahn joined local musical celebrity, Charlie Pastorfield, in treating us to a band concert at The Biltmore on the Corner late into the night. The performance was in memory of our recently deceased brother Michael Weinstein (College ’71). Gusburgers and Grillswith (local Charlottesville delicacies) were subsequently consumed on the Corner.
On Saturday morning student and alumni brothers participated in Charlottesville’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s which raised more than $4,500 from the Sammie team. Lunch was hosted at the chapter house on Chancellor Street as we hailed a televised Virginia football victory over Duke.
Other weekend activities included a Lawn and Rotunda tour, attending Inauguration activities of UVA’s 9th President, a golf outing, winery tours, and other opportunities for alumni to renew bonds of brotherhood and make new connections to the chapter.
Six of our eight founding brothers, the first Pledge Class and the Chapter’s accomplishments were honored by Supreme Prior Dan Grossberg and Executive Director Andy Huston at our Saturday banquet at Alumni Hall. We also remembered brothers who have passed on to Chapter Eternal. We heard inspiring remarks from UVA’s Dean of Students about the future of the University and from a recently published author about earlier times and traditions at UVA. We sang the Good Old Song and Fast and Firm to end the evening.
Many photos from the weekend are shared HERE.
