House Corporation Report

Harry Marshall ’61

Physical Structure and Finances. The House itself is in excellent physical and financial shape. Since January 1, 2012, $15,770.12 has been received from Phi alumni in donations. During that same period the undergraduates contributed a total of $6000 to the Major Maintenance Reserve. The operating budget for 2012-13 is some $153,400. The Board is now in the process of refinancing the mortgage on One University Circle to take advantage of very favorable terms offered by Virginia National Bank. It is anticipated that the mortgage payments will by reduced by some $6000 annually and the mortgage should be paid up in 2033. During the past Spring and Summer, some $30,000 in refurbishment occurred mainly to repair and repaint the exterior trim, renovate the 2d floor showers to correct a chronic leak, replace the AC unit, and upgrade the first floor bathrooms.

House Makeup and Chapter Advisor. The House remains at a heathy 50+ members, including a number of legacies, including: Aaron Shroyer ‘14, son of Mike Shroyer ‘83; Andrew Krouch ‘13, son of Bill Krouch ‘81; Michael Stablein ‘14, brother of Nick Stablein ‘11; and Sebastian Lulli ‘13, brother of Miguel Lulli ‘12. Eighteen pledges were initiated in September; more about this elsewhere in this issue of the Phiner Times. The fraternity remains under the watchful eye of Charlottesville real estate agent, Bradford Macon Gunter ‘09, as Chapter Advisor, who replaced Cameron Hill, ‘08, who, having graduated from the Medical School, is now serving a residency at Georgetown Hospital.

2013 Rush. This effort has been underway since the Fall and will be coming to a head in mid January 2013 with the start of the Spring semester. Please provide names and contact information of potential rushees to Chris Clark ‘13, House President, at cjc5wu@virginia.edu or 973-270-3606.

Trustees. Regretfully, Tom Faulders ’71 and Brendan Dignan ’01, because of potential conflicting interests, resigned from the Board, but will continue to remain active in Alumni matters. Both Tom and Brendan have served for a decade or more and made significant contributions over the years. The Board has created a new one-year Trusteeship for the graduating House President; now serving in this post is Conor Jones ’12.

1980-83 Alumni Event. Under the leadership of Bill Krouch ‘81, Bart Hester ‘82 and Bill Evanow ‘83, a very successful reunion took place this past April in Charlottesville. A cocktail party took place under the tent at One University Circle and a dinner occurred the following night at Farmington. Remarks were made by the organizers and other attending alumni.

140th Celebration. Next Fall will be the 140th anniversary of the founding of the fraternity and efforts are underway for the planning of the celebratory event. 2013 also marks the 50th anniversary of the occupancy of One University Circle. Under the leadership of then House President, John Herrell ‘63, the fraternity moved from 129 Chancellor Street to the new address. The event will include the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award which was awarded to David Gibson ‘62 at the 135th event.

As always the House Corporation Board looks forward to hearing from alumni at any time.
