Indigenous communities around the world face the same harsh reality of being evicted from their ancestral land and being denied the opportunity to exercise their sovereignty. In this session, we will be exploring challenges faced by indigenous communities in the context of the United States and the Philippines. Concepts of indigeneity and self determination will be explored in two case studies: Chamorros from the US territory of Guam and the Lumads from the Southern part of the Philippines. Emerson Fellow, Julie Bautista, will be discussing the indigenous landscape in US Public Policy and Archaeologist, Andrea Ragragio, will be exploring the internal displacement of Lumads due to militarization and counterinsurgency conflicts in Mindanao.
