Scholarships and Grants Overview

Financial Need Grant

Awarded to highly motivated LGBTQ+ students with financial need. Decisions will be based on academic achievement, financial need, essays, extracurricular activities, and demonstrated commitment to bettering the LGBTQ+ community at UVA and beyond.

  • What: Financial awards up to several thousand dollars, processed through Student Financial Services and directly applied to student accounts

The Jeffrey L. Reider & Charles F. Otis Endowed Prize

The Jeffrey L. Reider and Charles F. Otis Endowed Prize annually provides a one-time scholarship award of up to $5,000 to a student of any sexual orientation who has demonstrated a willingness to advance the rights and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. The prize will also consider activity in music and the arts.

Decisions are made by a committee consisting of faculty chair Fred Maus, and four students involved with the LGBTQ community at the University of Virginia.

The John A. Herring Scholarship for Social Awareness

The John A. Herring Scholarship for Social Awareness is awarded to students who demonstrate leadership, citizenship, and fellowship and have actively supported, through volunteerism and advocacy, the LGBTQ Center at the University of Virginia. Rather than self-nomination, the recipient(s) will be selected through nominations submitted from peers, students, faculty, staff, and alumni. 

The Peter L. Page Scholarship

The Peter L. Page Scholarship provides $40,000 in scholarship funds, $10,000 per year for four years. Decisions are based on students’ academic achievements, essays, and extracurricular activities demonstrating exceptional commitment to their communities. Annual renewal of the scholarship is contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA. 

Ad-Hoc Grants

The following grants are open year-round and evaluated on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified of a decision two weeks after a monthly application review deadline has passed. The application review deadlines for the 2023-2024 school year are as follows:

Student Group Grants

This form should be used by UVA student groups and community members to request funds from QVA. When completing this form, please be aware that requests are evaluated and awarded monthly and funds can take 2-3 weeks to process and disburse.

Speaker Series Grant

QVA seeks to provide financial support for student groups attempting to bring LGBTQ+ leaders onto Grounds via its Speaker Series Grant. When completing this form, please be aware that requests are evaluated on a rolling basis.

Internship & Study Abroad Grant

QVA provides internship and study abroad grants to highly-motivated LGBTQ+ students with financial need who have been offered an unpaid internship or study abroad program. When completing this form, please be aware that requests are evaluated on a rolling basis.

Professional Development Grant

QVA provides professional development grants to highly-motivated LGBTQ+ students with financial need who have opportunities to attend professional conferences. When completing this form, please be aware that requests are evaluated on a rolling basis.

  • Who: UVA undergraduate and graduate students
  • What: Funding for any kind of program costs, as well as travel, lodging, food, and purchase of professional attire.
