As reported in the last Xi-Lights, a new state law increasing penalties for hazing went into effect on July 1, 2022. Chapter members and advisors will be required to undergo training in facets of the new law, and first-year students will be given instruction on the new law during orientation.

On a related note, two fraternities—Kappa Alpha and Phi Gamma Delta–were recently suspended from University activities for four years due to hazing violations. The hazing activities occurred during the spring before the new law went into effect. Three other fraternities and one sorority were given lesser penalties for hazing-related activities.
