When we first met in the summer of 1994 to discuss re-forming the VWC, we wanted, more than anything, a space of our own…a space where we could share our voices, to sing and be heard, where we could fully use our talents for music and leadership, and where we could positively affect the climate of UVA. We fel that women’s voices should be heard more, and louder. We felt that a women’s chorus would be a boon for everyone, not just those of us who desperately wanted to sing in one.

Now, twenty years later, you are still here. You are still singing. You are using your talents to make the University a better place. We commend KaeRenae Mitchell and all your leadership for guiding your group with wisdom and dedication. We were moved to hear of your recent cover of “Avila” by the Wailin’ Jennys, honoring Hannah Graham. Thank you for that moment of grace that shone in the darkness.

Now, we encourage you to continue to sing out. Continue to make your voices heard. You are a gift to a hurting community, and your music can be a source of healing and inspiration. In the midst of confusion and pain, your friendships can carry you through, and spread a little more light.

We are so proud of you, and grateful for you. If we can help let us know.
