Celebrating 25 Years of Bolívar: 2022 Awards Brunch Recap and Upcoming Events – Mark Your Calendars

December 2022

Whether a student, alumnus, staff, faculty, and/or parent, we all make up the UVA familia. In the spirit of being a part of this community, we wanted to recognize the shooting that killed three UVA students: Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry, and injured two others: Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan. We grieve this great loss and send our thoughts to those directly impacted – may they find peace, support, and healing during this difficult time. We know this semester has been a tough one for students on Grounds and we send our best wishes to all students wrapping up the rest of this semester before entering into the winter break.

The Bolívar Network is excited to share a recap of our 2022 Awards Brunch and an exciting announcement to bring together the Hispanic/Latinx familia on Grounds in 2023!

The Bolívar Network’s 2022 Awards Brunch

On Saturday, December 3, the Bolívar Network held its annual Awards Brunch at the Manning Pavilion at Alumni Hall where we honored the recipients of the annual Book Scholarship Award, the annual Pablo J. Davis Award, and the annual First-Year Scholarship! After two years of holding this event on Zoom due to the pandemic, we were thrilled to come together on Grounds in-person this year and celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of our awardees. We’d like to thank everyone who attended and the Alumni Association for all of their support in making this a reality!

The Bolívar Network is excited to announce that this year, four Latinx students – three undergraduate students, and one graduate student – received the Bolívar Network Book Scholarship for the 2022-2023 cycle. Congratulations to our Undergraduate Book Scholarship Recipients: María José Corvalán Cabañas ʼ23; Anthony Guevara ʼ23; and Paola Linares ʼ23. Congratulations to our Graduate Book Scholarship Recipient: Fernando Casarotti, Darden ʼ24.

The 2022-2023 Recipient of the Pablo J. Davis Award is Frank Valdez ʼ21.

We are also pleased to announce the second recipient of The Bolívar Network First-Year Scholarship, Zachary Rios ʼ26.

Fundraising and Development

On GivingTuesday we promoted our campaign to raise $25,000 in support of our 25th Anniversary. Anniversary gifts of any size, $25, $250, or $2,500, can be made online as a one-time gift or ongoing gift. For those that have already contributed to this campaign, mil gracias, muito obrigada!

At this year’s Awards Brunch, we added our 34th recipient of the Book Scholarship. Our collective efforts and Alumni Hall’s stewardship of each gift will impact UVA’s next generation of Latino students. Donate to support our Annual Book Scholarship, our Leadership Fund, or our First-Year Scholarship. Learn about UVA’s Latino alumni group, The Bolívar Network, and review our fund descriptions.
