Xi Lights – December 2019

Annual Meeting and New Directors

Thanks to the Alumni Board for voting me in as President for 2019-2021. I appreciate the support and the opportunity to serve Xi Chapter.

We welcomed new board members, as well as lost a few. We will miss their wise counsel and guidance, and appreciate their service on behalf of Xi Chapter. During their tenure we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Xi Chapter at the University, and completed the $1.1 million renovation of the house. Read More.

Homecomings

This year’s Homecomings set a recent record in the number of alumni attendees to the tailgate before the UVA-Georgia Tech game. 74 alumni and spouses, joined by the current brotherhood and guests, were at Preston Place on a chilly November Saturday to enjoy Earl’s ham biscuits, Jackie Morris’ barbequed venison, and other refreshments before the noon kickoff and victory over Georgia Tech.

Some of you may have read about University President Jim Ryan’s new 10-year Strategic Plan. Mike Lenox ’93, a professor at the Darden School, was invited by the board to update us on details of the plan and its impact on fraternities. In short, the plan is not expected to impact Xi Chapter operations. The plan is quite broad and detailed, and deserves to be reviewed by all who are interested in the long-term plans of the University.

Undergraduate Report

The undergraduates recently elected Georgi Solar ’22 as President for the upcoming school year. Georgi is a second year Commerce major. Ryan Partridge ’20, the outgoing President, has an update on house activities.

House & Grounds

Will Moomaw ’14 provides an update on the House and upcoming milestones. The replacement of the first story floor and interior stairs was finished in July, completing one of the last major renovation projects inside the house. As mentioned in the last Xi Lights, our next major project will be on the gutters and drainage system as the old part of the basement has been experiencing flooding during heavy rainstorms. The subcommittee is currently seeking estimates on the work and hopes to have everything completed by the summer of 2020 at the latest. Read More.

Annual Fund Update

At the end of 2018, we closed our 5-year Annual Fund campaign. Started following the renovation, the fund was a tremendous success, generating $165k in pledges. In 2019, we have focused on collecting the balance of outstanding pledges and have over $150k collected to-date.
